1966 GMC TDH-5303 Virginia Transit Company No. 418

This bus was destroyed by the fire.

Built in Pontiac Michigan, this bus is an excellent example of the GM fishbowl, nicknamed for its unique six-piece windshield design.  The 5303 design proved to be the most popular of all the GM new look series.  The 418 entered service at Virginia Transit Company of Richmond (now GRTC) in September 1966, seeing regular service for the next 18 years.

During those first 20 years, perhaps 418's greatest moment was as a co-star in the 1985 HBO film Finnegan, Begin Again with Robert Preston and Mary Tyler Moore.  Shot on location in Richmond, Moore and Preston fall in love while spending a good deal of time riding around on the 418.  The 418 received its own press coverage, and a photo spread—in Bus World Magazine.

Alas, the glory didn't last.  Two years later, it was retired from GRTC, entering the service of Blacksburg Transit.  There it was repainted and renumbered 1618.  Due to its age, it only saw limited service, being used for field trips, or as a shuttle bus during Virginia Tech football games.

From Blackburg Transit, it moved on to The Virginia Museum of Transportation in 1993.  In August of 2000 it came to CC&T, along with over a million miles on the original Detroit Diesel 6v71 engine.  It is restored to its original VTC condition.
